My Role

UX and UI design for a mobile App.

My Tasks

Evaluating the existing product, facilitating workshops, redesigning the app and testing it with users, and creating a design system.

Story

Today, more than 50 million people are living with dementia. There is currently no cure, and sadly, the numbers are growing. In the time it takes to blink twice, another case of Alzheimer's is added to the total.

After hearing Aichom’s story, I was immediately interested. After all, we don’t come across such significant problems very often in your day-to-day jobs, and I find it fascinating to be able to work on projects as meaningful as this one. I’ve gladly joined Aichom’s team as a product designer with an aspiration to help redesign the existing MVP product so that it would become more functional, visually appealing, accessible, and easy to use.

What I Did

UX and UI design for a mobile App

Evaluation

I evaluated the app’s designs having the Nielsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics in mind. Some problems were immediately apparent, such as failing contrasts. Among other things were ambiguity, inconsistecy, and confusing user flows.

Jobs-to-be-Done Workshop

As a way for the whole team to come on board and decide what needs to be done, I suggested facilitating a “Jobs to be done” workshop. We have described the app's main goals and the ways to achieve them and took into consideration some important external factors and criteria. Below I present some of the “Jobs” described during the two-hour workshop.

Redesign

First impressions matter. To avoid high dropout rates, it’s crucial to have a seamless sign-up and onboarding experience, especially when the app requires Apple watch pairing to use its main feature. Below is a flowchart describing the onboarding and setup process.

1 — Onboarding and Signing Up

You will see a short presentation of Aichom’s main features when first entering the app. You are invited to sign up, log in, or, if you prefer, skip right to the free part of the app - the Caregiver’s Library.

2 — Subscribe and Pair a Watch

After successful signup, you are invited to subscribe to Aichom’s premium service, including the app’s main features - location tracking, health monitoring, reminders and emotional support for caregivers. The next step is to pair your loved one’s watch with your iPhone, and you are all set up.

3 — Caregiver's Library

Caregiver's library is a free feature full of evidence-based resources on caregiving & caregiver's wellbeing. The design offers a seamless, immersive reading experience and a search function for those who know exactly what they are looking for.

4 — Location Tracking

The main feature of Aichom's app is location tracking. The app will provide your loved one's current location at all times. If your loved one leaves the safe zone you have set, you will be notified immediately.

5 — Reminders

For people with dementia, even the simplest everyday tasks can slip out of mind. By setting reminders, caregivers can take care of their loved ones even if they are apart. There is also a voice reminder function, which is particularly useful for those with weak eyesight.

6 — Health

Aicom helps to monitor your loved one's health, providing insights about the most important things - fall detection, high heart rate, restlessness and more.

7 — Apple Watch Designs

The interactions on the Apple watch are kept to a minimum, only requiring a caregiver to do the pairing process once before giving the watch to the loved one. At other times the app mainly runs in the background except for displaying reminders.

Design System

I created a design system for consistency and reliability when growing an app and for easier editing after each feedback round. As the new features are added, the design system will grow with every change, leaving no interpretation in the development stage. I present some parts of the design system below.

Usability Testing

Having an MVP version ready, I did a usability test with the prospective users of the app. In 30-minute sessions, we have gathered so many valuable insights that it was challenging to fit everything on the board. An affinity diagram and a prioritisation workshop were done right after the testing, with the whole team on board.

The Takeaway

Currently, dementia costs more than $818 bn/year with no cure yet, and the cost is continuously rising. Aichom is well on its way to easing caregivers' lives worldwide, and the app receives a lot of appreciation as the problem it aims to solve becomes more pertinent with every passing day. Aichom's team has reached many significant milestones during the time I was working with them, and I'm glad the results of my work are also starting to show.

tick3

The team has released the Ios and the Iwatch apps to the App Store and developers are continuously improving them.
